Overview
The Sri Kuralappa Perumal Temple is located at Thiruppathisraram and it is dedicated to God Vishnu. This temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples.
About The Temple
This temple has been revered in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham which is a Vaishnava canon and also in the Mangalaasanam which was sung by the azhwar saint called Nammazhwar. The holy tank of the temple is named as Lekshmi theertham. The main hall of the temple has a lot of paintings of Dashavatharam of God Vishnu.
About The Deity
The chief deity of this temple is God Thiruvazhmarban who is also named as Kuralappa Perumal. The idol of the chief deity is quite tall. This idol reaches 9 feet and is also made up of a special element which is called Kastusarkara yogam, mustard and paste of jaggery. Because of this fact, no abhishekam is done on the presiding deity.
Legend and Stories
According to legend, a couple named Udaya Nangai and Kaarimaran had got married at Thiruvanparisaaram. They did not have any children and hence visited the Thirukurungudi Temple where God Nambi is the presiding deity. They prayed to the God for child boon. God Nambi appeared before the couple and he told them the He Himself will be born to them as child. He told them the child would be very auspicious to them and will bring great reputation. He asked them to take the child to a tamarind tree as well.
As the God had said, Udaya Nangai gave birth to a male child on the Visaka Star day. They did everything as said by the God and the Child suddenly climbed on the tree in the Gnana mudra which is a very common yogic position. The child is known to have been in penance for a time of 16 years. This thing is known to be the most sacred event which had taken place in the holy village of Thiruvanparisaaram.
